If you are experiencing symptoms such as redness and swelling of the gums, teeth appearing longer than normal, teeth bleeding when eating hard food, you should contact your dentist immediately. Gum recession causes tooth decay, which makes tooth decay treatment mandatory.

How are gums and receding gums treated?

If your gum and gingival recession problem is mild, it is treated by the dentist by thoroughly cleaning around the gums. During deep cleaning, plaque and tartar on the teeth and roots are carefully removed, and the exposed root surface is flattened to prevent bacteria from attaching to it. If the dentist deems necessary, antibiotic treatment can be applied to get rid of the remaining bacteria.

If your gum recession is too severe to be cleaned thoroughly, gum surgery may be required to repair the gum damage.

Surgical Methods Used to Treat Gingival and Gum Recession

In open flap surgery, the dentist folds back the affected gum tissue, removing harmful bacteria from the pocket and fixing the tooth tissue in place over the tooth root, reducing or completely removing it. Directed tissue regeneration is used when the bone that feeds the teeth is damaged. Bacteria are removed by folding back the gum tissue. Regenerative material is applied to the area and the gum tissue is fixed. In soft tissue grafting, tissue from the upper palate or another area is sutured to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root. Your doctor will choose the best surgical method for your needs.

Who is at Risk for Gum Recession?

Although gingival recession can occur at any age, age poses a risk for gingival recession. Approximately 88% of people aged 65 and over experience gum recession. People who use tobacco or smoke are more likely to have receding gums. Gingival recession can also be genetic. Diabetes also increases the risk of gum recession. If you are faced with such situations, you should seek periodontology treatment.
