What is Smile Design?

In fact, the biggest reason why individuals prefer smile design treatment is that the patient cannot smile comfortably when looking in the mirror. Smile design treatment also aims to make the patient smile comfortably. Because a comfortable smile causes people to feel more at peace with themselves and most importantly, to feel more confident in society. In smile design, when the patient smiles, the teeth are given a proportional shape according to the face, and the color and form of the teeth are made suitable for the face type. Form is important because everyone’s tooth forms differ from each other according to oval, square or different formats and this should be determined together with the patient according to the facial structure.

We call the design we create by adjusting the adequate tooth heights, tooth appearance areas, gum appearance areas by giving the most suitable tooth form that can go to the patient’s face. A special smile design is made for each case. Smile design is actually a type of design in which we determine the smile line and smile border by adjusting the teeth in the most appropriate size, color and form that can go to the patient’s face.

Another way to have healthy and natural smiles like smile design is scaling. You can have healthy teeth with scaling.

Who Can Apply Smile Design?

It can be applied to anyone who feels the need. In fact, it is necessary to question who it cannot be applied to. If there is no form or color disorder in the patient’s teeth, but the patient does not feel safe and cannot smile comfortably, we can apply it. Although there are no patients to whom smile design treatment cannot be applied, the necessity of treatment in certain patients should be questioned with the experience of the practicing physician.

For example, a patient with a very high smile line may apply to a physician because they find their teeth small in form. In such cases, the physician does not need to explain to the patient how the smile will change negatively after the procedure based on his/her experience.

How is Smile Design Applied?

Before the smile design is started, an approximate visualization of the design, called a mockup, is created for the patient after the treatment is finished. This temporary design can be applied to the patient. Thus, the patient can have an idea about what kind of smile he/she will have at the end of the treatment. With this mockup application, it is much easier and more realistic to explain to the patient what the smile design will add to the patient or why some of the patient’s wishes should not be implemented.

Thus, the result of the treatment can be planned before the treatment is started in line with the opinions of both the physician and the patient without encountering surprises at the end of the treatment. As we mentioned above, even if there is no problem in the form, size, color or any of these, smile design can be applied as a planning or treatment in order to make the patient feel better or to give the patient an idea.

As we provide services in aesthetic dental treatments such as smile design, we also provide services with our specialist physicians in surgical areas such as implant treatment.

Is There a Limit to Smile Design?

There is no age limit, but it is preferred to complete the patient’s emotional development and to go through puberty when the patient completes his/her physiological development. Because the treatments performed before the completion of puberty remain constant regardless of the physical change of the individual, it may be possible to disrupt the harmony between the pre-planned tooth form and the facial form over time. In addition, we do not want to intervene too much in healthy teeth. The aim of today’s treatment is minimally invasive treatment options, which we call minimally invasive, where the least intervention is made in the tissues of the individual. The evaluation of the question of whether the patient really needs this or whether we can give the patient what he wants without touching the teeth with a simple whitening method is directly related to the experience of the physician.

What is the First Examination?

First, we determine whether the patient’s face is proportional. What is the height of the upper lip in the patient’s facial structure? Are the dimensions of the teeth high on the patient’s smile line? Does the patient have a low smile line? We reveal all of these once and then we take an impression and do a mockup study. In fact, before the application is made, this is a preview study, that is, it is the study where we show the patient what you will give at the end of the smile design. In the same way, depending on the working habits of the physician, we can design it in a way that we can show the final form of the patient in the computer environment by taking analog or digital measurements in the digital environment.

In line with these designs, the physician evaluates what kind of treatment option can be realized with the patient’s needs and expectations. The most invasive treatment option among the treatment options is the designs that we can make only by touching the front surface of the teeth, which we call laminated leaf porcelains, which are very thin and have porcelain thicknesses down to 0.1 millimeter. However, if the patient’s teeth have too much deformation, we treat the teeth with emax or zirconium crowns, which we intervene relatively more.

How Long Does Smile Design Treatment Take?

Smile design treatment does not necessarily require us to perform an operation or a restoration on the patient. Sometimes we can actually have a smile design with a simple gum operation or a simple whitening process. However, if it requires a restoration, that is, laminated veneers, zirconium, emax crowns, the treatment can be completed very quickly today. Depending on the number of teeth and the type of case, it can be completed between 3 and 10 days.
