What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be defined as benign overdevelopment of the breast in men. Some studies have revealed that it occurs in one out of every three men. Gynecomastia can occur during infancy and old age, but most commonly during adolescence. Although it does not affect health badly for any reason, it may cause mental wear and tear. Since it can cause the person to feel ashamed and bored, this situation can be eliminated by treatment. It requires aesthetic surgery and medical treatments, it is not a condition that goes away on its own.

Symptoms of gynecomastia include swelling, pain, tenderness, and fluid coming from the nipple of one or both breasts. It is very important to manually examine both breasts for gynecomastia treatment. If a walnut-sized and hard mass is encountered in the nipple, breast UGS is performed and confirmed and planning for diagnosis and treatment is made.

Why Does Gynecomastia Occur?

Gynecomastia, which is usually caused by fluctuations in the testosterone hormone, can also occur as a result of drug use, drug and alcohol use, side effects from health conditions, and the use of herbal products. Although estrogen is known as the female hormone, it is also secreted in small amounts in men. Abnormal estrogen secretion or imbalance between testosterone and estrogen can cause gynecomastia.

Illegally used anabolic steroids and androgens used by athletes to increase muscle or improve performance are also known to be effective in the formation of gynecomastia. Approximately half of the people receiving dialysis treatment may develop gynecomastia due to changes in hormonal balance.

Treatment Options for Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia treatment is determined according to the type of gynecomastia. In adolescents with a disc diameter of less than 4 cm, it is best to wait for it to disappear spontaneously and to inform the patient; If the patient’s complaint is longer than 4 years or if there are clinical conditions that disturb the patient, there is an indication to start treatment. Medical treatment is recommended if the disc is between 4-6 cm and surgical treatment is recommended if it is larger than 6 cm.

Gynecomastia Surgery

The most definitive and effective method in the treatment of gynecomastia is surgical intervention. The type of intervention is decided by the surgeon after examinations and researches. Different treatments are applied to different types of gynecomastia. In glandular type gynecomastia, hard breast tissue is predominant and is surgically removed.

In mixed type gynecomastia, there is an excess of adipose tissue and glandular tissue and surgical operation and liposuction are performed at the same time. In the other type, fat-type gynecomastia, only liposuction can be performed because fat tissue is predominant. In other classifications, excess skin and the size of the breast tissue are evaluated and an appropriate treatment method is selected. As in every procedure of breast aesthetics, there are different surgical methods in gynecomastia.

Process After Gynecomastia Surgery

The recovery process differs according to the gynecomastia surgery and treatment applied. In liposuction applications, the person recovers more comfortably and can easily do many activities.

In procedures requiring surgical intervention, general or local anesthesia is applied and the person may remain under observation for a day depending on the situation. Resting for three days after gynecomastia surgery, not moving much accelerates the recovery period and allows you to overcome the process more easily.
